Geo-Horizon ‘07 – Imaging the Edge of Infinity

Geo-Horizon, the annual national technical symposium of Society of GeoInformatics Engineers, Anna University was held during 16th-17th March, 2007 at Colin Mackenzie Auditorium in Institute of Remote Sensing (IRS), Anna University.

The event was inaugurated by Prof. M. Sekar, Dean, College of Engineering Guindy Campus and Ms. Girija Vaidhyanathan I.A.S. presided over. Prof. S. Kaliappan, Director, IRS welcomed the gathering. Mr. C. Madan DeepaKumar, General Secretary SGE and Mr. E. Velappan, President, SGE briefed the gathering about the society, symposium and the days events.

Mr. Santosh Gaikwad, Information Officer of Salim Ali Centre For Ornithology And Natural History (SACON) while delivering a lecture on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Informatics, enlightened the audience about electronic collection of biota, integration of geospatial information and computer aided taxonomic identification systems and electronic field guides.

The afternoon session, was presided over by Mr. Neeraj Dixit, Product Manager of Autodesk Inc, which first revolutionized the software industry for building, infrastructure, manufacturing, media and entertainment, and wireless data. He being a member of Indian Road Congress, lectured on Dynamic Modeling – answers to challenges in road design. The first paper session had participants from all corners of the country presenting on Geographical Information Systems and various advances in it.

The second day witnessed a variety of technical and lighter events to bring the academic, analytic, interpretative and team playing skills out the of the participants. There was a lecture on Open Source GIS by Mr. V. Ravi Kumar, Joint Secretary of OSGeo India Chapter. Mr Ravi, a geologist by profession is one of the few eminent persons leading the world of Open Source software in the spatial domain.

The Second paper session covered domains like Remote Sensing, Global Positioning Systems, Satellite Image Processing and Disaster Management. To kindle the lighthearted people events like Interpretation game, technical treasure hunt, and a variety of informal events were conducted.

The valedictory address was given by Prof. S. Kaliappan. To sum up, Geo-Horizon has gained reputation all over the country for its exemplary organization. The symposium unveiled a unique opportunity for students gain knowledge about the industrial world. Guest lectures from eminent persons of reputed institutions and live demonstrations by companies, and instrument displays by IRS served as an eye-opener for the student community and industrialists. It can be said with confidence that Geo-Horizons in the coming years would be catapulting towards greater horizons.
