GeoHorizon - 06

RENDEZVOUS WITH THE HORIZON

GeoHorizon’06, the national level technical symposium was organized by the Society of GeoInformatics Engineers (SGE), Anna University. Dr.Vishwanathan, Vice Chancellor, Anna University inaugurated the two-day symposium on March 6, 2006 at the Colin Mc.Kenzy auditorium, Institute of Remote Sensing. Mr. Mukund Rao, CEO, Navayuga Spatial Technologies, Bangalore was the guest of honor. Dr.Kaliappan, Director, Institute of Remote Sensing.

Dr.Thirumalaivasan, President, SGE presented the welcome address.

Mr. Mukund Rao’s valuable lecture on ‘Spatial Technologies for Development’ was received with good attention.

Mr. Abhay.S.Mittal, Regional Director, Digital Globe Asia Pacific delivered a presentation on ‘High Resolution Imagery and the satellites to be launched by Digital Globe’. Digital Globe also provided the satellite imagery for Anna University campus.

Mr. Joseph from Census Department talked about the role of GIS in Census.

The first day proceeded with paper presentation session from students from various colleges all over the country. It proved to be a platform to demonstrate the technical excellence of students and included topics like Urban Planning, Transportation GIS, Remote Sensing and Image Processing.

While the second day kept most of the first and second years busy by running all around the campus searching for clues for the map game (a technical treasure hunt), the student delegates had a different sort of entertainment. The debate ‘Interlinking of rivers – An engineering prospective’ generated not just the heat of argument but also light on the topic.

The technical quizzes demanded great labor of the gray matter. Rounds like visual interpretation from satellite imagery, jumbled words, rapid fire, and identification of map symbols were delightful and kept the participants full of activity.

The GIS programming contest was a special event where the knowledge of students in GIS software were tested.

The main sponsors for the symposium were ESRI India, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation, Indian GeoInformatics Centre, CADD center, Reliable Consultants, Sokkia and DSM.

The second symposium of the Society of GeoInformatics Engineers drew to a close on the evening of March 7. Mr. Subbaraj, Treasurer, SGE presented the annual report for the society. Mr. Thirumurthy, HOD, Civil Engineering commended the students for making the event a very grand success and wished good luck for the forth-coming events of the society.
